Vintage Sizes
As you probably all know vintage
sizing varies dramatically from modern standards. Marilyn Monroe may have been a
size 12/14 but not as we know it today. She probably would have been an 8/10
using todays systems. Women's body shapes and sizes have changed over the
decades. For this reason vintage sellers including myself tend to avoid all
reference to vintage sizes and give their contemporary equivalent. I am a size
6/8 and measure a vintage size 12 to give you an idea. !!Quite a shock!! We
wouldn't want to cause an epidemic of eating disorders!!
A Simple Way to Measure Vintage
Garments
All measurements listed for vintage items are the actual fabric measurements
of the garment. All measurements are taken in inches. In order to assure proper
fit garment measurements must be slightly larger than your actual body
measurements. If you do not know your body measurements, the easiest way to
determine if a garment will fit you is to find a similar garment you may already
have. Lay the garment on a flat surface. Make sure all buttons, zippers, etc.
are fastened. Get your tape measure.
Bust /Chest measurement
Measure from underarm to underarm. Double that measurement to determine the
bust/ chest measurement for the garment. For example, if a garment measures 18
inches across, double that number for a bust/ chest measurement of 36 inches.
Waist Measurement
Measure across at the natural waistline of the garment (approximately 5 inches
below the bust line) again, double the measurement.
Hip Measurement
The hip measurement should be taken
approximately 7 inches below the waistline. Measure across and double. Garments
listed with a hip measurement of "Full" will usually fit most hip sizes
Shoulder Measurement
Measure straight across garment from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.
(do not double this measurement).
Inseam Measurements
Measure from crotch of pants down to the hem or cuff. (do not double this
measurement)
Length Measurements
Pants or skirts, measure from top hem to bottom hem.
Dresses, sweaters, shirts, coats, etc., measure from the highest point of the
shoulder, down to the bottom hem. (do not double this measurement).
Sleeve Length
Measure from armpi to cuff for the inner arm sleeve length
Measure shoulder seam to cuff for the outer arm measurement.
